Some people go to the Dubai Mall to shop, catch a movie, enjoy the indoor ice skating rink, or explore the aquarium. I went to check out the amazing cars that were parked inside the mall's garage. I was first struck by the sheer number or Rolls Royce automobiles at the mall all at one time. No income tax = lots of luxury cars! Before visiting Dubai, it was exciting to see the occasional Rolls Royce elegantly barreling down the street. Even in New York City, a Rolls Royce is relatively uncommon. But in Dubai, a Rolls Royce is the car of choice for the rich and famous. The Rolls Royce cars parked at the Dubai Mall were all late model and in flawless condition. Even more shocking, they weren't attended to by a driver or chauffeur . These cars appeared to be driven by their owners. Many of the fancy cars in Dubai have low license plate numbers -- a status symbol in many parts of the world. The first Rolls Royce I encountered had the number "14" embossed on the license plate -- talk about a mover and shaker! Automobiles that Americans would consider to be luxury cars were shrugged off to the sidelines when compared to the supercars parked in the garage. All of a sudden, the likes of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Range Rover seemed to lose their appeal. Even Porsche seemed commonplace when parked next to a Bentley or Lamborghini. The Dubai Mall is a great place to see rare models that are usually hidden away under lock and key. An Audi R8 was parked next to a brand new Ferrari with a unique paint scheme. While the mall's parking garage was full of camera's, visitors were allowed to get close to the cars and check them out - no touching allowed, though. After checking out the Dubai Mall's parking garage, we headed to the valet line where more supercars were parked. We arrived just in time to see a Ferrari rev the engine while speeding away. We then focused in on a red Ferarri with the doors in the open position. The scissor doors opened upward, like the DeLoren from "Back to the Future." Surrounding the car was an entourage of Americans. They were dressed casually and didn't like us taping them. Eventually, one of them gave us a "cut the tape" signal by motioning his hand across his neck. We didn't ask questions, these guys probably had bodyguards! All in all, the Dubai Mall is a great place to check out lots of amazing cars that you'd otherwise only see at an auto show. The mall itself is beautiful, but don't expect to find any bargains. It's a great place to go on a hot day, just to take advantage of the air conditioning. If you're used to shopping in America or Europe, you won't find any great deals at the Dubai Mall - clothes are rarely on sale. But the place is absolutely worth a visit. Thanks for watching!
